Abstract

At the invitation of Cuba’s Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Group (BioCubaFarma), Du Weimin, Chairman of Kangtai Biological; Zheng Haifa, Deputy General Manager; and Zhang Qian, Head of International Cooperation, attended the Ninth Closed‑Door Meeting of the China–Cuba Joint Working Group on Biotechnology, held in Guangzhou on July 3–4, 2017. Participants included representatives from Cuba’s Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Group, the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the Cuban Center for Molecular Immunology, the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology and the National Center for Scientific Research, as well as the Cuban Embassy in China, the Cuban National Center for Medicines and Medical Devices, and China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  The conference was attended by more than 80 representatives, including leaders from Cuba’s Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industry Group, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the Center for Molecular Immunology, the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology and the National Center for Scientific Research, as well as from the Cuban Embassy in China, the Cuban National Center for Medicines and Medical Devices, China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Commerce, the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the State Food and Drug Administration, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Bio-Thera Solutions, Changchun Haibei, Hubei Zhonggu Biotechnology, and other institutions and enterprises.

  The Chinese and Cuban delegates engaged in fruitful discussions, presenting and deliberating on the progress of bilateral cooperation in the biotechnology sector from 2015 to 2017, as well as on the status of projects undertaken by collaborating enterprises.

  During the meeting, Executive Director Du Weimin held a cordial and friendly discussion with Eduardo Martínez Díaz, Chairman of the Cuban Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Group. General Manager Du highly commended Cuba’s advanced biotechnological capabilities and expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Group. In turn, Chairman Martínez extended a warm invitation for General Manager Du to visit and conduct an on-site inspection of the Cuban Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Group.

  Sino-Cuban cooperation in biotechnology holds enormous potential and promising prospects. With the joint efforts of both governments and various sectors of society, this collaboration has yielded a series of significant achievements, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation. Guided by the principles of complementary strengths and mutual benefit, strengthening bilateral ties in the field of biotechnology is of great significance for advancing economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

Recently, Beijing held a grand commendation conference for the “Two Excellences and One Pioneer” initiative in emerging sectors. The “Two New” Working Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee recognized outstanding Communist Party members, exemplary Party affairs workers, and advanced primary-level Party organizations across the city’s emerging fields. The Party branch of Beijing Minhai Biotechnology Co., Ltd. was honored as an advanced primary-level Party organization in Beijing’s emerging sectors. Wu Chengyu, the branch secretary, attended the ceremony in person to receive the award.
