2018 Kuangmiao Annual Conference: “A New Era—Embarking on a New Journey Toward Rabies Elimination”
On April 12–13, 2018, the “2018 China Rabies Conference” was grandly held in Changsha, Hunan Province. Co-hosted by the Chinese Society of Preventive Medicine, the Chinese Society of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, and the China Working Dog Management Association, the conference was themed “Embarking on a New Journey Toward Rabies Elimination in the New Era.” It brought together more than 1,000 experts and scholars from government agencies, professional associations, and research institutions in the fields of public health and animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. Over the course of two days, the conference featured discussions on four key topics: domestic and international advances in rabies prevention and control; surveillance and diagnostics; immunization and practical measures for prevention and control; and post-exposure prophylaxis.

Influenza and pertussis vaccines administered during pregnancy are likely to be safe for the infant.
According to a February 21 report in the U.S. journal The Scientist, researchers recently published a study in the monthly Journal of Pediatrics examining more than 400,000 infants. The findings indicate that influenza and pertussis vaccination during pregnancy is safe. Among mothers who received these vaccines during pregnancy, the rates of hospitalization and mortality in their infants during the first six months after birth were not higher than those observed among infants born to unvaccinated mothers.

Why is the quadrivalent vaccine an ideal alternative to the DPT vaccine? The reasons are as follows: First, as shown in the figure, AEFI surveillance data indicate that the incidence of adverse reactions with the routine DPT vaccine is higher than that with the DPT‑Hib vaccine. Second, the quadrivalent vaccine employs a globally unique particle-size technology, which offers enhanced safety. In the DPT vaccine, the particle size of the aluminum hydroxide adjuvant significantly influences both the vaccine antigen and the post‑vaccination immune response. Aluminum hydroxide is the only human‑use vaccine adjuvant approved by the U.S. FDA. [Functions and Applications] During the production and administration of aluminum adjuvants, two primary environments are encountered: one is the environment in which the adjuvant adsorbs the antigenic vaccine, and the other is the interstitial fluid following injection.
