Abstract

On the morning of November 15, 2025, the “2025 Academician and Expert Roundtable Salon—Vaccine Development and Challenges for Hospital-Acquired Bacterial Infections,” hosted by the Innovation Service Center of the Beijing Association for Science and Technology and co-organized by the Daxing District Association for Science and Technology, the Management Committee of the Daxing Biopharmaceutical Industry Base of the Zhongguancun Science Park, and Beijing Minhai Biotechnology Co., Ltd. On the morning of November 15, 2025, the event was hosted by the Innovation Service Center of the Beijing Association for Science and Technology, with co-organizers including the Daxing District Association for Science and Technology, the Management Committee of the Daxing Biopharmaceutical Industry Base of the Zhongguancun Science Park, and Beijing Minhai Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Minhai Bio”).   The “2025 Academician and Expert Roundtable Salon—Vaccine Development and Challenges for Hospital-Acquired Bacterial Infections,” hosted by the event organizers, was successfully held at Minhai Biotechnology’s International Vaccine Industrialization Base. This salon focused on the increasingly pressing global public health challenge of hospital-acquired bacterial infections (HABI), bringing together academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, renowned university scholars, experts from national research institutions, and industry representatives to engage in an in-depth discussion on the latest research advances in HABI vaccines, key technological bottlenecks, and pathways for translating scientific findings into practical applications and industrialization.

HABI, one of the major challenges confronting global healthcare systems, is becoming increasingly complex due to the spread of multidrug‑resistant pathogens, with conventional antibiotic therapies showing limited efficacy. Against this backdrop, Minhai Biologics has proactively assumed a pioneering role in vaccine research and development, convening this high‑level, interdisciplinary, cross‑institutional dialogue to jointly advance scientific breakthroughs and clinical translation of preventive HABI vaccines, thereby offering innovative approaches to infection control.

The conference comprises two main segments: “Keynote Presentations” and “Dialogue and Exchange.”

Academician Zhang Gaiping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Peking University’s College of Modern Agriculture delivered an insightful presentation titled “Current Status and Future Challenges in the Development of Vaccines for Zoonotic Bacterial Diseases in China.” In his report, Academician Zhang analyzed the grave situation posed by zoonotic bacterial diseases, squarely addressing the three major bottlenecks in vaccine development—pathogen complexity, industrialization hurdles, and challenges in achieving commercial viability. He also proactively proposed innovative approaches—AI‑driven antigen design and synthetic biology‑enabled intelligent manufacturing—offering crucial insights to help the field break through these barriers.

Professor Zou Quanming, Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Immunobiological Products at the Army Medical University and a Major General in the technical service, in his report “Cross-Disciplinary Integration to Advance Translational Research on Original Superbug Vaccines,” elucidated the core logic of vaccine development—moving from innovative, multidisciplinary approaches to pragmatic pathways focused on translating research into practical applications. He outlined a clear roadmap from the laboratory to the clinic, offering valuable insights for overcoming technical challenges and bringing original scientific breakthroughs to fruition.

Researcher Ye Qiang of the National Institute for Food and Drug Control focused on quality control in the development of bacterial vaccine products, elucidating the key quality‑control considerations and evaluation criteria for vaccines against bacterial diseases, thereby providing essential guidance for comprehensive quality management across the entire vaccine value chain—from research and development through manufacturing to market approval.

Professor Hu Keping, an independent director of Kangtai Biological and Director of the Center for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, presented a cross-disciplinary technical report on Eucommia ulmoides, a time-honored traditional Chinese medicine that embodies the principle of “food and medicine sharing a common origin,” highlighting its potential in combating infections and delaying aging, thereby offering a fresh perspective on hospital‑acquired infection prevention and control.

During the dialogue and exchange session, the participating experts comprehensively reviewed the key challenges and future directions in HABI vaccine development, covering pathogenic mechanisms of nosocomial bacterial infections, vaccine design, preclinical research, and the translation of scientific findings into practical applications and industrial implementation.

As a leading enterprise in China’s vaccine R&D sector, Minhai Biologics has consistently pursued innovation-driven development, steadily advancing the research and development of next-generation vaccines and their international expansion. This symposium not only established a high-level collaborative platform integrating industry, academia, research, and application, but also showcased Minhai Biologics’ numerous pipeline projects in the field of vaccines for complex infectious diseases such as HABI, drawing widespread attention and fostering in-depth discussions among the attending experts.

More than 200 experts, scholars, and industry representatives from research institutes, universities, enterprises, and other organizations participated in the event both online and offline. By hosting this high-level academic symposium, Minhai Biologics further underscored its strategic vision and corporate social responsibility in the vaccine field, contributing its expertise and resources to the development of infectious disease vaccines in China and to global public health governance.
