Abstract
Recently, Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Co., Ltd. has launched a research and development project for a globally innovative vaccine—Pneumonia Klebsiella vaccine—and will vigorously advance preclinical studies, clinical trials, and subsequent industrialization efforts for this vaccine.
Klebsiella pneumoniae is currently one of the most drug‑resistant and virulent bacteria encountered in clinical practice, often referred to as the “king of superbugs.” In particular, carbapenem‑resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) exhibits resistance to virtually all first‑ and second‑line antibiotics. 2024 The 12th National Survey Report on the Prevalence of Hospital-Acquired Infections indicates that Klebsiella pneumoniae is the pathogen with the highest detection rate. In the World Health Organization’s “2024 Priority List of Bacterial Pathogens,” carbapenem‑resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae has been designated as a critical priority, making it one of the pressing global public health challenges that urgently require effective solutions.

This Klebsiella pneumoniae vaccine is a globally original, first‑in‑class product—a novel recombinant multivalent combination vaccine developed using cutting‑edge technologies such as reverse vaccinology and synthetic biology. It has now completed preclinical development and preliminary safety assessments; in animal studies conducted in a pneumonia model, its protective efficacy against challenge consistently exceeds 80%, demonstrating excellent potency and broad‑spectrum coverage. This vaccine is indicated for global use in high-risk populations susceptible to Klebsiella pneumoniae infections, including hospitalized patients undergoing prolonged hospitalization, invasive intensive care, or abdominal or urological surgery—particularly those at risk of surgical-site or device‑related infections—as well as healthcare workers, individuals with diabetes, patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD, and vulnerable groups like infants and the elderly. Relevant data indicate that China sees over 50 million inpatient surgical procedures annually, with more than 100 million people living with diabetes and approximately 100 million with COPD. Globally, the number of people affected by diabetes and COPD exceeds 800 million and 600 million, respectively, underscoring the vaccine’s substantial market potential.
As of now, no vaccine of this type has yet been approved for market launch worldwide. The successful implementation of this project is expected to fill a critical gap in national new‑drug development, and it holds significant strategic importance for strengthening China’s vaccine R&D platform and advancing the high‑quality development of the nation’s greater health industry. Moreover, by fostering integrated innovation among industry, academia, and research institutions, it is poised to offer a “China solution” to the global challenge of antibiotic resistance.
