Abstract
On July 28, 2022, the Chinese Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Hepatitis convened the “2022 Symposium on Eliminating the Public Health Threat of Viral Hepatitis” in Beijing. The symposium was attended by Wang Yu, Chairman of the Chinese Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Hepatitis, representatives from Kintor Pharmaceutical, a manufacturer of the hepatitis B vaccine, as well as prominent experts and scholars from institutions such as the Institute of Public Health at Peking University.
This symposium was convened to implement the Outline of the “Healthy China 2030” Plan, support the achievement of the targets set forth in the Healthy China Action (2019–2030), and advance the national goal of eliminating the public health threat posed by hepatitis. It reviewed the past three decades of China’s efforts—underpinned by robust government mobilization and international collaboration—to introduce cutting-edge recombinant‑DNA hepatitis B vaccines, implement the Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance program, and integrate hepatitis B vaccination into the national childhood immunization schedule. The event also underscored the proactive promotion of academic research on viral hepatitis prevention and control strategies, further elevating the scientific standards in China’s hepatitis field and advancing the cause of hepatitis prevention and treatment. By pooling resources and fostering coordinated action, the symposium seeks to drive China’s efforts to eliminate the burden of hepatitis.
In 2002, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) launched its funding program for China. That same year, China incorporated the hepatitis B vaccine into its national immunization schedule and decided to provide free hepatitis B vaccination to all newborns nationwide, a measure that significantly reduced the incidence of hepatitis B virus infection.
At the meeting, Liang Xiaofeng, Director of the Vaccine Industry Research Institute at Jinan University, noted that hepatitis B vaccination has played a crucial role in preventing hepatitis B infection and safeguarding public health and safety, thereby firmly embedding the principle of “vaccination for health protection” in the public consciousness. He emphasized that vaccine research and development must continue to be driven by innovation, as vaccines remain the primary tool for controlling viral hepatitis and liver cancer, enabling the prevention of liver disease at its source.
The hepatitis B vaccine is the first line of defense for newborns and is often referred to as the “first shot of life,” with a broad target population. As one of the earliest companies in China to undertake the research, development, and production of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine technology, Kangtai Biological has, over the past 30 years, manufactured and distributed more than 1.4 billion doses, providing immune protection to over 400 million people and holding a pivotal position in the national immunization program.
Zheng Jingshan, Assistant to the President of Kangtai Biological, stated at the symposium that the company’s independently developed 60-μg hepatitis B vaccine, intended for individuals with low or no immune response, can further curb the transmission of the hepatitis B virus.
Zheng Haifa, Vice Chairman of Kangtai Biological and General Manager of Minhai Biological, stated that the company was founded in 1992 with the mission of localizing recombinant hepatitis B vaccine technology in China and advancing its research, development, and production. “We are deeply proud to have contributed over the past three decades to the nation’s efforts in hepatitis B prevention and control and to the national immunization program. Looking ahead, the company will vigorously develop multivalent and combination vaccines, including those for hepatitis B prevention, striving to achieve the World Health Organization’s ambitious goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030 and thereby improving global public health.”
