Abstract
Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Daily reports: “I received my first two doses of the COVID‑19 vaccine produced in Shenzhen, and it’s been exactly six months. As soon as I saw that I could book my third dose, I came right over to get it.” On February 22, the first batch of booster shots—third doses—of the inactivated COVID‑19 vaccine developed and manufactured by Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Kangtai Bio”) officially began being administered. At a vaccination site in Guangming District, Ms. Chen told a reporter with excitement. At present, all eligible residents can make appointments for the Kangtai Bio inactivated COVID‑19 vaccine booster shot through the designated vaccination‑appointment platform.

In June last year, Kangtai Biological’s inactivated COVID‑19 vaccine was rolled out for vaccination in Shenzhen and has since been supplied on a large scale to multiple provinces, including Guangdong. On the 19th of this month, the State Council Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism approved Kangtai Biological’s inactivated COVID‑19 vaccine for use as a homologous booster dose, meaning that individuals aged 18 and above who completed the full vaccination course with Kangtai’s inactivated vaccine at least six months ago are eligible for a single booster dose—administered with the same vaccine. Mr. Wang, who received his shot on site, told reporters that he chose the “Shenzhen‑made” COVID‑19 vaccine out of confidence in the quality of products from a local company: “As soon as I got the notice, I came straight to get my third dose—both to help fight the pandemic and to add an extra layer of protection for my own health.”
Li Dong, Director of R&D at Kintgen Biotech, stated that, according to a paper published in the Chinese Medical Journal this January, seven days after receiving a booster dose of Kintgen’s inactivated COVID‑19 vaccine, neutralizing antibody titers against live virus increased rapidly, rising more than 20-fold compared with pre‑booster levels. By day 28, antibody titers remained at a high level, having increased by over 30-fold relative to baseline.
