Abstract
2021 Year 7 On the 9th of the month, the “Jinan University–Kangtai Biologics” Vaccine Industry Research Institute was officially inaugurated at the Jinan University Alumni Building (hereinafter referred to as Jinan University). This marks the first research institute in the field of public health at Jinan University jointly established by industry and academia. On the same day, a donation ceremony was held for the Jinan University Kangtai Biopharmaceutical Development Fund, during which Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Kangtai Biologics) pledged RMB 30 million to establish the fund, which will support the construction and development of the “Jinan University–Kangtai Biologics” Vaccine Industry Research Institute.
According to reports, Shenzhen Kangtai Biological is a leading enterprise in China’s vaccine industry, having developed the country’s first quadrivalent vaccine with independent intellectual property rights. This vaccine has played a vital role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases such as COVID‑19, hepatitis B, and pneumonia, providing robust technical support to the Vaccine Industry Research Institute. Last year, Jinan University and Kangtai Biological signed a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly advance the establishment of a biopharmaceutical research center. With this latest donation, the two parties are further accelerating the development of the Vaccine Industry Research Institute.
Professor Liang Xiaofeng of Jinan University and Vice President of the Chinese Society of Preventive Medicine has been appointed as “Jinan University-” Song Xianzhong, President of Jinan University and Director of the Kangtai Biological Vaccine Industry Research Institute, presented Liang Xiaofeng with the appointment letter for the “Jinan University–Kangtai Biological Chair Professor.” This marks the first time a professor has been awarded this distinguished honor since Jinan University established its named chair professorship system.
“Kangtai Bio Chair Professor at Jinan University,” Liang Xiaofeng, delivered a keynote address on “Opportunities and Challenges in China’s Infectious Disease Prevention and Control and the Vaccine Industry.” Liang Xiaofeng explained that a specialized Institute for Disease Prevention and Control will be established, focusing on vaccine research and development, chronic disease management, and population-level health. The institute will not only emphasize close collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions but also leverage Jinan University’s multidisciplinary strengths to foster deep partnerships between medicine and computer science, as well as between medicine and big data. At the same time, capitalizing on Jinan University’s identity as a “school of overseas Chinese,” the institute will share China’s successful experiences with developing countries.
