Abstract

Recently, Beijing Minhai Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Kangtai Biological, received an invention patent certificate from the China National Intellectual Property Administration for its pentavalent vaccine and its preparation method. The pentavalent vaccine is indicated for the prevention of diseases caused by pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis (polio), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). These diseases pose a serious threat to human health, particularly to the lives and well-being of infants and young children. In addition to protecting against these five conditions, the pentavalent vaccine can reduce the number of required doses from the standard 12 doses in the national immunization schedule to just 4, thereby improving vaccination compliance among infants and young children and lowering the incidence of adverse reactions.

Recently, Beijing Minhai Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Kangtai Biological, received an invention patent certificate from the National Intellectual Property Administration for its pentavalent vaccine and its preparation method.

The pentavalent vaccine is used to prevent pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis (polio), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). ) diseases caused by these factors; the aforementioned conditions pose a serious threat to human health, particularly to the lives and well-being of infants and young children. The pentavalent vaccine is effective in preventing the above-mentioned five… While preventing this disease, the number of vaccine doses can be reduced from the standard 12 doses in the national immunization schedule to 4, thereby improving vaccination adherence among infants and young children and lowering the incidence of adverse reactions.

Currently, only one foreign‑made pentavalent vaccine is available in the domestic market, and it is both expensive and has experienced repeated supply shortages in recent years. With this approval, Kangtai Biological has become the first—and so far the only—domestic company to obtain a patent for a pentavalent vaccine, thereby filling a critical gap in China’s vaccine landscape. As the company progressively advances the research, development, and production of its pentavalent vaccine, it will gain a distinct local‑cost advantage in pricing and supply reliability, breaking the monopoly of imported products in the domestic market, enhancing vaccine accessibility and affordability, and ultimately benefiting more Chinese children while delivering substantial social benefits.

In terms of market prospects, the pentavalent vaccine achieved global sales of 21 in 2019. US dollars, up 10% year over year It ranks fourth globally in total vaccine sales; in 2019, the domestic market saw 4.5954 million doses of the pentavalent vaccine released through batch approval, a year-on-year increase of 126%. The pentavalent vaccine boasts substantial growth potential in both international and domestic markets, reflecting a major trend in the vaccine industry’s development.

Kangtai Biological boasts extensive R&D expertise in the development of combination vaccines. Its domestically exclusive, already‑marketed product—the acellular pertussis–diphtheria–tetanus–Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine (a quadrivalent vaccine)—is currently the domestic vaccine that simultaneously protects against the greatest number of diseases and also ranks as the highest‑selling domestically produced combination vaccine in China. With the company now obtaining China’s first patent for a pentavalent vaccine, which represents a technological upgrade to its existing quadrivalent formulation, the gradual advancement of subsequent R&D and industrialization is expected to significantly strengthen the company’s competitive position within the industry and further enhance its market competitiveness. At the same time, this exclusive domestic intellectual property will help establish a robust safeguard for public health and China’s biosafety.
